This month I promised to talk about affiliate marketing, which I describe as 'recommending what you love'. This accounts for roughly one half of the income I earn on the Internet each month, and continues to be an excellent business model for you if you are just getting started with your home business. We do this every day when our friends and neighbors ask us to recommend a good restaurant or a movie. In the world of online business we share our best resources with our community of subscribers in return for a commission for each sale that results from our referral.

When I worked in real estate we did this when we had a client who was moving in or out of our area. The referring agent typically received twenty-five percent of the commission when the property was purchased or sold. This was a legal and acceptable way of doing business. In other areas, such as loans, this was strictly prohibited, so you had to make sure you understand the rules, laws, and acceptable practices.

The Internet is a place where you are able to recommend other people's products and services to your list of prospects and clients, as long as you disclose that you are an affiliate. I do this by telling people about the product I am recommending and then giving it my 'Green Seal of Approval'. Any time I am discussing someone else's products I always make reference to the fact that I am their affiliate.

One thing to remember about affiliate marketing is that you will never want to promote something to someone else unless you have purchased it yourself and benefitted from it in a significant way. This just makes sense, if you stop to think about it. You wouldn't recommend a restaurant where you had never eaten or a film you had not seen, so the same in true with products and services online.

Typically I will write both an article and a blog post to give a review of the product and to use myself as a case study as to how it has helped me in my business.

Affiliate marketing is a form of passive income; even though you must do some work the first time to get it moving. Passive income is a business model that brings in money while you sleep, or while you are on vacation, helping out in your community, or visiting a sick friend in the hospital. When I write articles or blog posts to promote an affiliate product, I do that work once and make money over and over and over again without having to do anything again in real time.
