Flight Attendant, Cabin Crew Cover Letters - How to Write Them Effectively

Your chances of succeeding in your job applications is enhanced when you include a well written flight attendant cover letter along with your resume/CV. Recruitment personnel of commercial airlines are faced with numerous applications for flight attendant (cabin crew) positions. A carefully crafted covering letter should be brief and not contain too much information that it becomes a replica of your resume. The letter is your opportunity to introduce yourself and briefly mention your background, experience and expertise. This will draw the reader's attention, adding impetus to your resume, giving it heightened prominence.

Your letter should be summarised in 3 or 4 paragraphs and a maximum of 5 paragraphs is acceptable. Importantly, your letter should not be a copy of your resume/CV. In the first letter introduce yourself and refer to the vacant position, affirming your interest, giving reasons by briefly mentioning your background. You should explain that the flight attendant position you are seeking is a natural progression in your career development.

The main body of your letter should comprise the second and third paragraphs. In this section of your covering letter, mention your current / most recent position along with the demonstrable competencies and skills you used to execute your remit. Also mention the job position that preceded that role and the skills used in your daily workload. Mention how your roles have helped you develop, hone and acquire skills. If you are aspiring for a Flight Attendant Manager role, mention how you have demonstrated managerial and organizational skills in the past, not only in work but also in your leisure pursuits. You should highlight skills and competencies relevant to those used by flight attendants and cabin crew.

If you write your cover letter along these lines, it will carry persuasive impact and create a professional impression in the mind of the reader. Conclude your letter as you started, in a persuasive and professional manner by re-affirming your interest in the position. You should already have researched the airline prior to making your application by visiting their website and reading their press releases and other literature. Find out about their corporate culture and the opportunities and level of support they offer for staff development. Mention what you know about the employer from your research and how it fits with your career development goals. Let them know you want to be a part of their organization. Employers notice competent candidates that show interest and demonstrate knowledge of their organization. In addition mention that the skills and qualities that are evident in your resume/ CV are highly relevant to the flight attendant vacancy. Also mention that your confidence, enthusiasm and commitment would be hugely valuable to the airline.

Cover Resume Letter - How to Write an Amazing Resume Cover Letter, From Medical to Administrative

Why a cover resume letter? Why not just my resume after all I worked on it for weeks to make it perfect, right. Right, except that your resume, as great as it is, needs something to complement all the experience, knowledge, dedication, tenacity you would bring to the organization. Here's a couple of pointers I picked up to turn my cover letter into an interview, rather than a file cabinet candidate.

The first step to making more money is getting the interview. No matter how great your resume, without a good introduction the interview isn't always in the bag. Lets look at this from the employers stand point. Your resume says you have excellent organization skills, you have background in research and development or you want a position that would require these skills. Yet, your letter doesn't show case any of these attributes.

Your letter simply introduces you, at best. If and when you make the interview, lets assume, you don't have a clue as to what the company does, its a red flag. A good interviewer will ask you what you know about the company. They wont expect you to have the details but a general idea would be expected. After all they don't just want someone there simply because they're looking to make more money. What's the value to the company? That's the question in their mind.

My cover resume letter is always custom to my employer. I picked up that pointer one time that I made a mistake and sent a generic cover resume letter to an HR department and it made no sense. Instead of getting a call for an interview I got a call telling me they didn't have any opening in that department.

That was embarrassing, needles to to say I thanked the person for the call and didn't try to clear up the confusion. How would I look trying to secure a job not even knowing what they were hiring for. Learning experience I tell you.

The key here is learn about the company or companies you are submitting resumes too. Know the industry they're in and if its earned any distinguishing awards or part of any charity or organization. When possible address the letter, by name, to the person who will be reading it to interview candidates. As I mentioned above stay away from cover resume letters that are to generic. When I put this into use my options opened up significantly. The job market it tight. Present yourself as an asset.

The last thing before this gets to long is exactly that. Don't make your letter to long. In no way, longer than one page. Leave them spiked enough to call you.

Creating a Powerful, Skills Based Resume - One Liners that Work

I have heard people say so often that a skills based resume doesn't work. From this, I can only assume that they just don't know how to put one together properly, because a well written skill based resume is powerful, creates interest and gets you the interview.

So what is the difference between one that works and one that doesn't?

The difference is whether just write down a list of skills you hope the reader will accept you have or whether you use one-liners to prove that you have the skill.

Creating a Powerful, Skills Based Resume - One Liners that Work

You may have a line in your resume which reads:

- organized, hard worker, excellent communication skills, computer proficient

This proves nothing, except that you've read the ad and are regurgitating the information onto paper!

If my resume says I have great computer skills, why should anyone believe me? Especially since under "Education and Training" you will find nothing related to learning computers!

They will believe me if I can tell stories to prove that I have the skill I am claiming.

So here is how to go about it.

First look carefully at the job description - or find out as much as you can about the job. What exactly are they looking for?

Let's assume you are looking at a job advertisement which just says "excellent computer skills." This is pretty vague and you don't know what software they need you to know, but it's a pretty safe bet that Microsoft Office is required.

Next, think of stories, true stories from your life - they can be as long as you like at this point - stories that describe your proficiency on computers. What have you done with computers? What projects? What software did you take courses in, teach yourself, and what did you use this information for after you'd learnt it?

I am self taught, so this makes it harder to prove I know what I claim to know. However, I have used computer for almost 20 years and this gives me a wealth of stories from which to draw.

Here is my story:

One of the first things I did once I learnt to use a Word Processor (it was Word Perfect 5.1, for those of you who were around in the "olden" days) was I undertook to create a newsletter for a social group of which I was a member. So, my one liner could look something like this:

- Created & produced a monthly 12 page newsletter, using various advanced formatting functions

I am also a handwriting analyst and as such I provide written or verbal consultation reports to clients. When I was at home with my children this was a VERY part time occupation, but the computer skills I used are still valid.

- Created & formatted 4 page structured reports for clients, responsible for grammar, spelling, layout and content.

Are you getting the idea?

Everything I am saying is the absolute truth, but I am phrasing it in business-like terms, and instead of just saying I know how to use Word, I have given them 2 concrete examples of what I have done with the program.

This is the basis of the skills based resume.

If you look back to my story about doing handwriting analysis - I mentioned to you I did either written or verbal reports. There is probably going to be a section in my skills based resume, no matter what job I am applying for, entitled "Communication Skills." After all, what job wouldn't be made easier if it's incumbent had good communication skills? So can you guess what is going to appear in this section of my resume?

- Discussed sometimes sensitive report results with clients, using brevity, clarity and tact.

Now, I'm assuming most of you are not handwriting analysts! But you all have something going for you. You all do many things. Take a little thing that you felt you did or do well, and try creating a one-liner from it.

If you are feeling modest, and thinking it makes you seem too grand - don't worry, this is normal. Try thinking of the action or skill as belonging to someone else, say your best friend. If you possibly can, think of someone else who actually does this same thing. Then describe it in a one liner describing it for their resume, with no inhibitions or thinking of it as being about yourself. Then objectively look at what you wrote, and ask yourself if this could in all honesty describe you also. The answer is probably "yes."

Writing a skills based resume does not include any deception. It involves describing your skills in business-like terms, which unless you got the skills in business, is probably a way you have not previously looked at them.

Give it a try.

This, of course, is just the start. You have to understand how to put together the entire resume, but for now - get working on those powerful one liners which can land you the job for which you are qualified.
